How do I know when it is time to end my marriage?

On Behalf of | Feb 16, 2022 | Divorce |

Marriages can be complicated and messy, and sometimes they last much longer than is healthy. The problem is, sometimes, spouses just do not know when it is time to throw in the towel. This post will analyze when it may be time to think about a Florida divorce.

Internalize, not just externalize

Before exploring divorce factors, it is important to look at a marriage holistically, and not just to blame the other spouse. After all, it takes two to make a marriage work. When deciding if it is time, focus internally as well as externally. Do the inner work to understand what makes one happy before deciding that divorce is the right move. Otherwise, Floridians may find that divorces and failed relationships become the norm, rather than a one-off mistake. This, of course, is not the case when abuse is an issue.

Abuse

If one is in an abusive relationship, it is time to divorce, without a question. This can be any form of abuse, physical, emotional or verbal abuse. This type of relationship is unhealthy and, possibly, dangerous. Get out.

Diverging life paths

In some relationships, we do not talk about the big life events before marriage. This can be something as huge as wanting children to something seemingly minor, like where one wants to live. But, these major life paths can destroy a honeymoon phase quickly. For example, if one spouse cannot imagine living an entire life without kids, and the other spouse feels the opposite, the marriage is likely not going to last. It is not fair to ask either spouse to give up such aspirations. Think about these types of non-negotiables (i.e., deal-breakers), and have a conversation with the other spouse to make sure that both spouses are on the same page. This conversation should happen before a Florida marriage, but if spouses are already married, it should be an ASAP conversation. After all, couples should want to know whether divorce is on the horizon now, rather than waiting decades in the future.

Pain points

Does the marriage bring joy and happiness or pain and sorrow? For Pensacola, Florida, readers this may seem like a straight forward inquiry, but it is one that may take therapy to fully flesh out the answer. But, how the marriage affects one’s life is definitely a consideration on whether to divorce.
