There are several different ways child support is enforced. Understanding child support enforcement resources and methods are helpful for parents seeking to collect child support but it is also important for paying parents to be familiar with the potential consequences for failing to pay child support.

Child support enforcement methods and resources

Parents who fail to pay child support can face consequences including:

  • A suspension of their driver’s license or vehicle registration.
  • Payment of a fine;
  • Seizure of bank accounts;
  • Seizure of income tax refunds; and
  • Jail time;

Once a child support order is in place, it is important that parents keep up with their child support obligations. If they fail to do so, they may face child support enforcement consequences. In addition to helping parents collect child support, and children receive child support, the family law process can also help struggling parents who are having difficulty making child support payments

When a parent is unable to meet their child support obligations, they may be able to request a child support modification. This blog has previously discussed child support modifications which may be made based on a significant change in circumstances for the parent or the child. The paying parent should remember to continue paying child support until the family law court has approved a child support modification which they will have to request if they think it is needed. In the meantime, they should also be familiar with child support enforcement measures and recipient parents should be familiar with how child support is collected and enforced.
