The different types of alimony in Florida

When a Florida couple decides to get divorced, they often wonder if alimony is going to be part of the divorce settlement. There are a few factors in which a person would receive alimony. These include if one spouse needs alimony after a divorce and if the other spouse can afford it. In Florida, there are several types of alimony that may be awarded.

Permanent periodic

This is where a person is awarded alimony on a permanent basis.

Durational alimony

This type of alimony offers payments for a moderate amount of time. It is only awarded in marriages that have lasted between 8 and 16 years.

Temporary alimony

This is alimony that is awarded while the divorce is in process. It can be established as soon as the couple files for divorce and lasts until the final divorce support order has been completed by a judge.

Bridge the gap alimony

This is intended to use to help ease the transition between married life and divorced life. It can only be used for up to two years and is intended to help a person with short term goals.

Rehabilitative alimony

This is alimony that is supposed to help a spouse become self-sufficient. It can be used to learn job skills, go to college, etc.
