John Paulson made billions of dollars shorting the housing market before the 2008 crash, but it now appears his net worth is on the cusp of taking a major hit.

It was recently announced that Paulson has filed for divorce from his wife Jenny.

The couple were married for 21 years during which time Paulson accumulated the majority of his fortune. They met at Paulson’s hedge fund, where Jenny worked as his assistant.

Paulson made his fortune shorting mortgage bonds before the 2008 housing crisis. His net worth is estimated at $5 billion, although some insiders say his true fortune could be much greater.

With no prenup in place, the divorce is expected to be hotly contested, with Paulson’s immense wealth and the couple’s various multi-million-dollar properties at stake.

Paulson has hired famed divorce attorney William D. Zabel; his wife has hired equally the equally notable Robert S. Cohen to represent her.
