Ending a marriage is a stressful process, even in cases in which both spouses agree that heading separate ways is the best course of action. For many Florida couples, anger will be the predominant emotion during the divorce process. While a degree of anger can be a healthy thing, too much can have a negative effect on the entire process. It is imperative for spouses to learn how to recognize, limit and manage their anger during this important period of time.
Excessive anger can color decision-making and make every aspect of divorce more difficult to manage. It should also be noted that anger is not always expressed in the red-hot rage that many associate with the term. Anger can also be insidious, rising slowly over time until it permeates every interaction with a soon-to-be ex-spouse.
Learning to manage anger is different for everyone. For some, simply having a close friend or family to vent to about divorce drama will suffice. For others, writing, exercising or embracing new hobbies will relieve the negative effects of anger. Often a short period of counseling is the best way to address divorce-related anger. A therapist can listen to your anxieties and concerns and provide guidance on how to handle your emotional reaction to your divorce.
Allowing anger to play a dominant role in the divorce process is a mistake. Doing so can make the entire experience more stressful and expensive than it needs to be, and it can leave both spouses drained, both emotionally and financially. Learning to manage anger during divorce is one of the most powerful ways to have a positive impact on the outcome of a Florida divorce.
