Florida parents often look forward to sending their children back-to-school after a fun and maybe-not-so relaxing summer. However, divorcing couples may find that their children’s education is a source of contention.
One of the key issues that parents who are divorcing face is that of the legal and physical custody of their children. Intertwined with child custody issues is the question of where the child will primarily live, and where they will go to school.
Oftentimes, it is simply unrealistic for children to commute between two homes while attending one school. This means that parents will have to come to an agreement as to what is in the best interest of their children, and specifically what makes the most sense for their children in terms of which school the children should attend.
Once the school is decided upon, whether it means keeping the kids at the same school they have been historically attending or transferring to a new school, the decision actually may make living arrangements easier to come to terms with.
If the parents decide that it makes most sense for the children to transfer to a new school, it is important to keep in mind that this will also result not only in the loss of the intact family unit, but also in the loss of friends and familiar environment.
This naturally can be an emotional time for everyone, both because of the divorce and because these are very sensitive issues for both parents and their children. As a result, it is extremely important not to let one’s emotions get in the way of making good decisions about what is best for the children’s long-term future.
