Unfortunately, many big companies that develop common household goods are more concerned with their profits and less so with the wellbeing of their consumers. Especially in the case of the common weed killer called Roundup, the manufacturer called Monsanto Corp. is still selling a product that has caused lawsuits that have settled in collectively over $2 billion. Many users of Roundup weed killer have experienced cancer diagnoses that have been linked to Roundup. Yet, Monsanto Corp. continues to sell this product, putting the lives of an innumerable amount of consumers at risk. What Is Roundup?

Believe it or not, Roundup is the most commonly used herbicide and weed killer in the world, and many people use it to address gardening problems with their lawns, gardens, or even at public spaces like parks and playgrounds where children can be exposed. Monsanto Corp., the manufacturer of Roundup, nets about $6 million in profit each year, and an estimated 250 million pounds of the product are used every year.

The main concern related to the compounds used in Roundup is the main active ingredient called glyphosate. Many studies have been conducted on this chemical compound that leads scientists to believe it puts individuals at a much higher risk for developing multiple kinds of cancer. Even the World Health Organization has deemed Roundup a “probable human carcinogen” because of the inclusion of it’s main ingredient, glyphosate.

What Adverse Health Outcomes Are Associated With Use Of Roundup?

The most severe of the adverse health outcomes caused by the use of Roundup is the development of multiple kinds of cancer. Unfortunately, farmers that are more likely to be low-income are believed to be at the highest risk for developing cancer because of Roundup. This serves to drive health inequities between different working groups, and these farmers are at a serious disadvantage because they may not have the resources to understand the connection between their health and Roundup or the ability to hire a skilled attorney.

Types of cancer that have been linked to use of Roundup include leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and B-cell lymphoma. Symptoms to keep an eye out for if you suspect you may be experiencing poor health as a result of using Roundup include:

  • Chest pain
  • Anemia
  • Shortness of breath
  • Large lymph nodes
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Repeated nosebleeds
  • Quick/easy bruising
  • Chills
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Night sweats
  • Serious infections
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Chronic headaches
  • Skin rashes

Roundup Lawsuit History

There is a lot of history when it comes to lawsuits filed against Monsanto for their Roundup product, and luckily for consumers, the juries tend to fall on their side. The first major win for a plaintiff filing a case against Monsanto was in 2018 when the plaintiff was awarded $289 million in damages. Even though this amount was later reduced to $78.5 million by the judge overseeing the case, there is no denying that this was a big win for consumers who have been severely negatively impacted by Roundup. The plaintiff in this case was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using Roundup on a daily basis at school properties for years.

Another major win for consumers in a lawsuit against Monsanto regarding Roundup was in 2019 the first federal court case involving Roundup. The plaintiff in this case used Roundup on 56 acres of his property from the 80’s until around 2012. In 2015, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and during his case, the jury awarded him $80 million in damages, $75 million of which were for punitive damages.

Finally, the biggest win against Monsanto for their Roundup product was in May of 2019 when both individuals in a couple were diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using Roundup on a regular basis. The jury in this case awarded the plaintiffs a little over $2 billion in damages.
