How Divorced Dads Survive Father’s Day

Father’s Day is approaching, and some may be concerned about what to expect, especially those dads who are divorced or recently split from their spouse. A lot of a father’s greatest loss during a divorce is spending time with their children. It’s important to keep in mind that divorce affects your children too and Father’s Day is the perfect time to show them just how much you love them and how happy you are to be their dad. It may be called Father’s Day, but it really should be spent celebrating those who made you a dad in the first place. Whether you are only spending a few hours or the entire day on Father’s Day with your children, be sure to let your kids know that you are there for them.

Leave Resentment at the Door

It’s common for an individual to feel anger or resentment towards their ex for an extended amount of time following a divorce. However, be sure to keep in mind that Father’s Day is about you and your children. So any angry feelings you have been harboring should be left at the door. Keep things as cordial as possible in order to make the best of your day with your kids.

Thank Your Ex

If your ex does any favors for you, be sure to tell her, “Thank you”. For example, if she allows you to get the children on her weekend or allows them to have an extended stay, be sure to thank her for being understanding. While it may be difficult to thank her following a divorce, it will help make co-parenting easier and create a better future for your children with fewer difficulties.

Plan Ahead

Planning ahead will help you avoid any difficulties that may arise. Just winging it will take away from you making the most out of your time with your children. So, do a little bit of thinking and planning ahead in order to make the most of the day with them.

Get Creative

Rather than just hanging around the house, get creative and do something that will create a lasting memory! It doesn’t have to be something completely out of the box. Maybe you can take them to a local hiking trail, play park or complete a project together.

Applying the above tips will help you to make the most of this Father’s Day with your children. Always keep in mind that the divorce process should be as smooth as possible for the sake of your children and always put them first despite what your feelings may be.
