Dating During Divorce - Is it ok?

Dating while going through a divorce is not unusual. Actually, it is pretty common - however, just because it is common doesn't mean that it is always the best choice. Divorce is different for each couple because each person has their own unique issues they are dealing with while going through the divorce process. While at times dating can be helpful to your situation, it can also cause more issues than you truly need. Each divorce is different, so dating while going through it is circumstantial.

If the reason behind your divorce is because of an affair, moving on to a new boyfriend or girlfriend during the divorce process could cause even more tension between you and your soon to be ex-spouse. If you do decide to date during the divorce process, it is best to keep the situation to yourself rather than exploiting it for your former spouse to see. Keeping the drama level down to a minimum during the divorce process will help you to get a quick resolution.

If you do find yourself with a boyfriend or girlfriend while going through the divorce process, it is absolutely advised not to introduce them to your kids just yet. Your children are still trying to get used to what their new "normal" will be with their parents splitting up. Introducing a child to a new love interest may not just make the process more difficult - it could lead to custody issues.

If children are not involved, dating during a divorce could help bring a bit of normalcy back to your everyday life. It is best for both parties to date, rather than one begins dating before the other because more often than not, divorcing individuals will fight over all insignificant matters. But, one a new love interest comes along both parties can begin to realize life can go on and may potentially be better. This realization makes a divorce settlement that was once tumultuous much more amicable to resolve.

Divorce is complicated and can be made much more difficult depending on your choices throughout the process. Some judges may not care if you are dating, while others may think it is wrong. Consult with an experienced divorce attorney who can best advise you on the actions to take during your divorce, like Stephen T. Holman.
