When parents divorce, the most contentious issues are usually child-related. Sometimes, Florida parents are unable to agree, leaving their children in the middle. Fortunately, Florida State University researchers have acquired a grant in the amount of $250,000 to develop an online toolkit for co-parenting after divorce.
The grant came from the Vandermark Foundation. The online toolkit is designed to help parents meet the goal of healthy co-parenting after divorce. A program director at FSU believes that effective co-parenting leads to well-adjusted kids and is happy that the foundation realized the need for the project. The project is called Successful Co-Parenting After Divorce and is being run in collaboration with multiple divisions, including the College of Communication and the College of Social Work.
Almost 25 percent of families are headed by a single parent, and over a million children are subjected to divorce each year. When parents are able to resolve conflicts and prioritize, it increases the likelihood of having healthier children. Parts of the project include educating families on the effects of divorce and fostering co-parenting relationships that are healthy.
Parents who are ending their marriages may want to focus on working out child-related matters in an amicable manner. By making real attempts to work collaboratively and putting the needs of their children first during the divorce process, they may be able to avoid litigation. Often, Florida parents find that sitting down with a mediator is an efficient way to handle most or all of their issues. If mediation is not successful, litigation may be the way to find resolutions for their issues.
