Stevie J. arrested for back child support, then fails drug test

Many fans may remember Stevie J. from the role he played in a popular reality TV show, “Love and Hip Hop Atlanta”. Florida residents who are not fans may also be interested in his story as he is now in legal hot water after a recent arrest for failure to pay child support. He is scheduled to appear for a child support arraignment in February.

Back in 1999, Stevie J. was ordered to pay the mother of his two children $8,500 a month in child support. However, it appears that he was not meeting those obligations and has reportedly failed to pay child support since 2001. He was arrested in June 2014, and a drug test was conducted while he was in police custody. It was allegedly discovered that he was using marijuana and cocaine. A judge granted him a $25,000 bail, and a condition of his release was that he had to consent to regular mandatory drug testing.

He reportedly did well for a period of time and even passed his regular drug tests for seven consecutive weeks. However, things started to take a turn for the worst when he violated the conditions of his bail. He allegedly failed 10 of his drug tests, after which he was taken to a rehab facility where he must remain for 30 days. Reports indicate that he owes more than $1 million in child support.

Meeting child support payments is not an option, it is a requirement. These payments are ordered by the court to allow the custodial parent to pay for basic necessities, such as food and shelter for the children. Not only can failure to pay land parents in jail, it can also lead to other penalties, such as driver’s license suspension and the loss of other professional licenses. Florida parents who are not receiving their court-ordered child support payments may want to explore the legal options available to them.
