Man accused of not paying child support for 21 years

On Behalf of | Nov 7, 2012 | Firm News |

Florida readers may be interested to hear about a child-support case from another state. The story centers around a man who owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in delinquent payments for child support. Anyone having issues with child support should understand their legal rights so they can learn how to best resolve their situation.

The 58-year-old man was arrested on Oct. 29. Over the 21 years the man allegedly failed to pay court-ordered child support, he amassed an arrears balance which currently totals more $600,000. Officials say that is the highest such total in his county. The child support payments for his three children were the result of a divorce action and date back to 1993.

The man now faces two charges of grand theft against his children, who are now adults. In addition, four misdemeanor counts for disobeying a court order were charged. The local district attorney’s office filed complaints against the man previously in 2000 and 2002. Each attempt to get the man to pay child support was unsuccessful. In lieu of $200,000 bail, he is being held in jail.

While this case may be extreme, many parents have difficulty with child support. Custodial parents need the money to raise children, but parents paying child support may have difficult financial situations. Having a full understanding of their legal rights can help in many cases.
